Transitioning from California to Corning

Transitioning from California to Corning: What Inspired Me, What’s Different, and How I Capture Memories Here

Hello, hello! I’m so stoked you’re here. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to trade sun-soaked California skies for upstate New York’s seasonal wonderland, pull up a chair, grab your favorite drink, and let me tell you all about it. 🌿

From Sunsets to Season Changes — Why I Moved

Back in California, I lived for warm breezes and sunlit afternoons. I photographed families, couples, seniors—everything in that dreamy West Coast light. But somewhere along the journey, I felt a tug: What else is out there? What fresh light, new backdrops, new stories await?

That’s how I ended up in Corning, NY!.. Well that is half of it… along with my significant other getting a new job. Together we felt a pull and wonder for what else is out there. So here we are! In the Southern Tier, and oh boy, am I loving it.

A picture of us feeling the pull for something new…

What’s Different (And Deliciously Dramatic) About the Weather Here

Let’s talk weather—that ever-changing, drama-loving friend up here in Upstate NY… or what I have witnessed so far!

Leaf magic: One of the biggest differences is watching the leaves change. From greens to golds, ambers, crimsons—every day feels like a living painting. I’m just a little bit obsessed. The Finger Lakes and surrounding hills are quickly changing to these electric colors and I am HERE (clap) FOR (clap) IT (clap)!

Frost, chill & mystery: I haven’t experienced a full snow season (yes, it’s still on my “first winter here” bucket list). So far, I’ve only glimpsed frosty mornings and whispered rumors of “ we are due for a harsh winter”. I can’t wait to see how snowy scenes unfold and how that influences my portrait style.

Four seasons in technicolor: Unlike California’s more subtle seasonal shifts, here you get everything — spring bursts, summer greens, fall fireworks, and eventually snow. Each season gives me new ways to shoot, new moods to explore, and new stories to tell.

Will this spoiled puppy endure the snow? The world may never know.

What’s Still to Come (Yes, I’m Looking Forward to Snow!)

I’ll confess: I’ve not yet dealt with a full snowstorm session. I haven’t shot in true winter whites or frozen mornings full of breath-fog. But that just adds to the excitement. I can’t wait to experiment with snow sparkle, muted light, contrasts, warm winter wardrobe against a cool backdrop.

So stay tuned, friends — I’ll be documenting first snowfalls, cozy family sessions, holiday portraits, and all of the magic in between.
